The singer is known for Brazilian music, such as choro, samba and waltzes from the thirties on.

Homage to Carmen Miranda

To revive the rather unknown repertoire of the singer Carmen Miranda, Cecilia Arellano has launched the project "Chôro para Carmen". She lends a voice to old songs of the tropical diva and also takes up unknown pieces that have not been recorded on any sound carrier until today.

The singer and her musicians

Cecilia Arellano's heart beats for traditional Brazilian songs, which she interprets in an expressive and innovative way. In doing so, she brings together the most diverse styles and musical influences of the thirties. Through new arrangements she changes and revives the musical styles. Her group consists of experienced musicians for improvisation of Chôro and Samba. Her repertoire ranges from classical Brazilian music to Bossa and Marcha.

Cecilia Arellano's Biography

Cecilia grew up in Sao Paulo, Brazil and studied social sciences and lyrical singing at the State University of Sao Paulo. Her studies later took her to Buenos Aires and Holland, where she trained as a soloist at the Royal Conservatory of Haia.

The Chôro

Chôro music developed in the first years of the Bela Epoca (1870s to 1920s) initially as a purely instrumental style of playing. Later, the percussion instruments commonly used for samba were added. Typical for the sound is a slightly melancholic mood, from where the name "chôro" comes (chorar = to cry, to lament).

As in jazz, improvisation also plays an important role in the chôro. The style is still the instrumental music favoured by many Brazilian musicians. Contemporary, popular Brazilian music would be inconceivable without it.
